Nick Dougherty
One of these days, we're sure young Nick Dougherty is going to reach up to all that finely honed potential and win majors, just like his old mentor Nick Faldo. The Liverpool lad is one of the top players of his generation and he's licking his chops for his first Masters appearance. And young Nick is an awfully nice young man, too, even if he says "Damn!" more than most Boy Scouts. But that's just because we gave him some tricky questions about himself ... Oh yes, and Oasis. Bosh!

IGWT: Thanks for taking our little quiz. It's a little like a pub quiz except there's only one round and pretty much only one category: questions about Nick Dougherty, and a few other nonsense ones. And everybody's pretty much sober. Hard ones about golf first, and fun ones go last. Just out of curiosity, if this were a pub quiz, would you have a clever team name for yourself?
ND: It would be Dough's Doughnuts.
IGWT: Ready, steady, here we go ... Let's start off with a statistical one. For one point, in which year did you have your longest average driving distance on the European Tour, within three yards?
ND: I'd say it was 2002, and about 294 yards.
IGWT: It was 296.77 yards in 2003. And for extra credit, in which year did you have your worst season on the Euro Tour in terms of putts per round, and how many putts did you average?
ND: Oh, ummmm … probably 2004 and I'd say 30 putts.
IGWT: It was also 2003 and you averaged 30.6 putts per round.
ND: Damn! 2002 again.

IGWT: A kind of tricky one here: What do these nine golfers have in common: Thomas Bjorn, Robert Coles, Marcus Fraser, Gregory Havret, Maarten Lafeber, Peter Lawrie, Wen-chong Liang, Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood?
ND: They're all a bunch of…. (Laughs) … Good guys! I swear I was going to say good guys. Don't you print anything else, mate.
IGWT: Don't worry, we'll only print what you say, and of course they're good guys.
ND: Umm … I don't know. Give me the names again?
IGWT: (Names repeated) And I can tell you that it's to do with the Caltex Masters in Singapore, 2005.
ND: OK ... I'm going to say that they all finished in the Top 5 behind me.
IGWT: They all rounded out the Top 10 finishers behind you. It was nine names, Nick ...

IGWT: How much did you win in pounds sterling for your first European Tour win, within £5,000?
ND: £89,000.
IGWT: We have £113,603.
ND: No, that's wrong. I know I'm right. Quite sure of it.
Ian "Stretch" Moore, Nick's caddie: Yeah, I'm sure of that too, unless you're holding out on me, Nick.
ND: No, no … It's 89K, mate, I'm sure of it.
Stretch: You better be. I'm going to check if you owe me more percentage. Maybe these guys are right.
IGWT: Checking! ... Ah, I see, we had the £113,603 figure because that's what your total was on the Order of Merit after the win. Just testing you. Sorry to worry you, Stretch! ... (All laughing) ...

IGWT: Within five yards, what's the official distance of the par-4 18th at Laguna National in Singapore?
ND: Ummm … 396 yards.
IGWT: It's 386 yards. And within 25 yards, how long do you reckon the course is?
ND: I'd say 6,700 yards.
IGWT: Wrong again. It's 7,207 yards.
ND: Damn!!!

IGWT: This might not be so easy to remember. Can you remember what you were wearing on the day you won Singapore for your first title?
ND: Yeah, pinstripe trousers and a blue shirt.
IGWT: I think that's good enough. It was charcoal pinstripe trousers, pale blue shirt, white visor, black shoes.
ND: And a black belt as well.
IGWT: No extra points for that, wiseguy.

IGWT: This should be an easy one. Your second title came last year at the Dunhill Links Championship. Can you tell us what your scores were in order, and what courses they came on?
ND: Let's see … Kingsbarns I shot 66, Carnoustie I shot 67, St Andrews I shot 66. and then 71. I think that's right. I was 18-under.
IGWT: It was 67 at Kingsbarns, 66 at Carnoustie, 66 at St Andrews and then 71 at St Andrews.
ND: Was it? Damn!
IGWT: Can you name the rest of the Top 5 from the Dunhill Links?
ND: Rose, Rory McIlroy … ummm. Geez, who were the other two?
Stretch: I know.
ND: Do you? ... Can my caddie help me?
IGWT: Afraid not. I'll give you a clue. One guy finished really well at Carnoustie once and the other one is an older guy ... a veteran, you could say.
ND: Oh! ... Paul Lawrie and … someone like David Frost?
IGWT: About that old.
ND: Barry Lane was doing well there. Was it Barry?
IGWT: You got it.

IGWT: This might be another toughie. Can you name the other nine guys who were your Great Britain & Ireland team-mates at the Walker Cup in Georgia in 2001?
ND: Luke Donald, Nigel Edwards, Jamie Elson, Michael Hoey, Graeme McDowell, Richard McEvoy, Steven O'Hara, Marc Warren, Gary Wolstenholme.
IGWT: Very good. And who was the youngest player on that team?
ND: Me.
IGWT: Right again.

IGWT: In which three years did you win your Faldo Junior Series titles?
ND: 1997, 1999, 2000. We're on to the easy questions now.
IGWT: Correct. Going even further back, you were an 11-handicapper playing at St Andrews in a junior event at the age of 11. Can you remember what score you made on the Road Hole when you came in?
ND: 13 I think.
IGWT: It was 14.
ND: I spoke too soon. Damn!

IGWT: After turning pro in 2001, you were named the European Tour's rookie of the year the following year. For whom is that award named?
ND: Sir Henry Cotton.
IGWT: Where is your trophy now for that award?
ND: At my Mum and Dad's house in a trophy cabinet.

IGWT: Can you recall the exact date and starting time when you first played with Tiger Woods?
Stretch: I know this one. I hope you do, because it was on my birthday.
ND: June … (Looking for help from Stretch but not getting it) June … July … I'll say July 23. Third round of the US Open at Oakmont. Start time I think was between 1pm and 2:30pm. 2:05 is in my head, but I think that's a bit late.
IGWT: It was 2:05 pm, June 16, 2007.
ND: Was that it? 2:05? Ahh, good shout!
IGWT: For an extra point, what was your score on the first hole of that round?
ND: Bogey.
IGWT: Please describe your tee shot on that first hole.
ND: It was a perfectly straight golf shot. Then the wind took it 40 yards left into the crap. It had nothing to do with a snap hook.
IGWT: What holes did you birdie in that round?
ND: The 4th hole and then the 11th.
IGWT: Correct. What were your overall feelings about playing with Tiger, the scene at Oakmont and how you played?
ND: It was an awesome experience. I guess it's every kid's dream in this generation to play with him and it was especially amazing to be able to play with him in the US Open.

IGWT: OK, enough golf questions for the time being. Time for some fun ones. For one point, can you tell me what "Vorsprung durch Technik" means"?
ND: Uhhh? ... Phhh … No idea. Is it about four springs and a technique on how to make them work?
IGWT: Sorry, It's "Advancement (or leaders) through technology".
ND: I should know that, actually.
IGWT: Yes, you should. But for a bonus point, can you tell us one popular song and also one popular film in which that phrase is used?
ND: Blur … I think the song was Parklife.
IGWT: Very good. And a film?
ND: Ah Geez … Um ... Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels?
IGWT: You got it.
ND: Bosh!!! What a good guess.

IGWT: Let's try a different sport. What's the name of your girlfriend's show-jumping horse?
ND: She doesn't have one at the moment. She does shows for horse owners and trainers, so she's always riding different horses.
IGWT: And just for a laugh, can you remember the name of your girlfriend?
ND: (Laughing) Yeah, it's Clare. I better get that one right!

IGWT: Here's a two-point music round. All about Oasis. For a point, which Gallagher brother is the older one?
ND: I think it was Noel.
IGWT: That's right. Liam Gallagher got all methed-out and hit Noel with something during a gig in LA in 1994. What did he hit his brother with?
ND: Must have been a guitar.
IGWT: No, it was a tambourine. What's the name of the first Oasis album?
ND: Definitely Maybe.
IGWT: Correct. OK, here come some Oasis song lyrics. These shouldn't be too hard. Here's the first one: "How many special people change, how many lives are living strange, where were you when we were getting high?"
ND: Champagne Supernova. Cool song.
IGWT: Correct. Second one is: "She's in a family full of eccentrics, she's done things I never expected ... And I need more time ..."
ND: That's another great song. She's Electric.
IGWT: That's right: Third one is: "You could wait for a lifetime to spend your days in the sunshine. You might as well do the white line 'cuz when it comes on top ... you gotta make it happen!"
ND: That's ummm ... I know that one.
IGWT: Sorry I don't know it, otherwise I could sing it for you.
ND: No, no, it's ummm… Oh yes, Cigarettes and Alcohol.
IGWT: Nice job on the Oasis. For a bonus point, can you guess what Tiger Woods' favourite band is? Hint: It's not the same as yours.
ND: I heard he likes a bit of rap. Probably Eminem or Puff Daddy. Something like that.
IGWT: It's Van Halen.
ND: I never would have guessed that.

IGWT: Right then, let's move on to the general sport category. Despite being from Liverpool, you're a fan of Manchester United. It's hard to follow football when you're moving about on tour, but can you tell me the goal-scorer for Man U. in the 1-0 victory over Lyon on March 4?
ND: Yeah, it was Cristiano Ronaldo.
IGWT: How about the goal-scorers in the 5-1 away win over Newcastle on February 23?
ND: Rooney and Ronaldo each scored two goals. I think Saha scored the other one.
IGWT: Very good. How many goals does Cristiano Ronaldo have this season as of March 6? That includes the league, FA Cup and in Europe.
ND: He's made a few, hasn't he? Umm, I'm going to say about 27.
IGWT: Not a bad guess, but it's 30. And how old is Sir Alex Ferguson?
ND: He's in his 60s now, mid-60s I think. I'll say 65.
IGWT: It's 66.
ND: Damn! That was close.
IGWT: Let's play Man U. squad sheets. I'll give you a squad sheet number, you tell me the player ... No. 11?
ND: Giggs.
IGWT: 32?
ND: Wes Brown … No, that's not it. It's Tevez.
IGWT: 13?
ND: Park Ji-Sung.
IGWT: 16?
ND: Carrick.
IGWT: 4?
ND: Hargreaves.
IGWT: Bang on.
2 out of 2
IGWT: Good. OK, in the general knowledge category, why might you be concerned about "DUCKING THEORY"?
ND: What? Why would I concerned? ... Umm, the theory is that I might get hit by a golf ball if I don't duck? (Laughs) ... No idea, mate.
IGWT: It's an anagram of the name Nick Dougherty. And who might this describe: "CAD OF LINK"? I need an answer now, come on! ...
ND: Is this another anagram?
IGWT: Yep.
ND: Ok, give me a second. Let me see if I can work this one out. Can you spell that out for me?
IGWT: Sure: "CAD OF LINK".
ND: (Writes down the letters)
Stretch: That's an easy one. I can see it.
ND: Yeah, I've got it. It's Nick Faldo.
0.5 out of 1
IGWT: You got it. Speaking of Faldo, you must be thrilled about your first upcoming visit to the Masters. This is a no-pointer, just for our curiosity, but assuming you will win someday, what might you serve at your own champions dinner?
ND: English food, for sure. Bangers and mash maybe. Or fish and chips.
IGWT: Do you think the old guys will like it?
ND: Of course. Everyone loves English food! (laughs)
IGWT: Well, that concludes the quiz proper. Thanks so much for playing, Nick. Good luck for the rest of this week.
ND: No worries, mate. Thank you.
(* Extra half-point awarded for correcting us, and for not holding out on his caddie. Well done, Nick, maybe you are a Boy Scout - Ed.)
- Nick Dougherty was interviewed by SG Matthews and Laurence Wells
