Vijay Singh
He's one of golf's most misunderstood giants, but Vijay Singh's hard-won accomplishments on the course stand alone much like the man himself - cutting an angular figure against his surroundings. He's a Hall of Famer already and is the last golfer in the world not named Tiger Woods to hold the No. 1 ranking. The big Fijian and 2000 Masters titleist always tells it like it is ... and so before Augusta, Vijay sat down to give us some straight answers about himself ... Oh yes, and Pink Floyd, too! Vanaka!

IGWT: We appreciate you taking time out to meet us for breakfast this morning to do our little pop quiz, Vijay. Boring and easy ones first, then fun and hard ones later, just like the practice tee ... Here we go ...! You've said in a previous interview that both the best and worst shots of your career have taken place on the same hole. What hole in the world would that be?
VS: On the 12th at Augusta? Maybe 15th. Could be 13th. Not sure, but I know it was at Augusta.
IGWT: You said it was 15th at Augusta. When was the best shot?
VS: When I won. Final round of the 2000 Masters.
IGWT: OK, and when was the worst shot?
VS: 2001 maybe?
IGWT: It was the final round in 2002, third shot.
VS: Oh yeah, I hit two in the water, I think.
IGWT: In your opinion, what is the greatest Masters finish in history?
VS: Nicklaus in 1986.
IGWT: And where do you rank your Masters finish in 2000 on that list?
VS: (Smiling) It was the best for me.

IGWT: Thinking about Augusta, can you remember the menu from Phil Mickelson's Champions Dinner at the Masters in 2007?
VS: Steak and ice-cream, I think.
IGWT: It was barbecued ribs, chicken, sausage and pulled pork, with coleslaw.
VS: It was so bad I don't remember. I think I must have ordered the steak and ice-cream then.
IGWT: What did you serve up at your Champions Dinner in 2001?
VS: Thai food.
IGWT: I think we'll give you that. We have the whole menu here. Seafood tom kah, chicken panang curry, baked sea scallops with garlic sauce, rack of lamb with yellow kari sauce, baked filet Chilean sea bass with three flavor chili sauce, lychee sorbet.
VS: Yeah, it would take me a while to remember it all again.
IGWT: Did most of the guys enjoy it?
VS: Yeah, I think so. Except some of the old guys. They ordered steak.
IGWT: What do you think Zach Johnson will do this year?
VS: I don't know. Hopefully it's good.
IGWT: A question of interest for us. What is your best or favorite memory from the Masters dinners you have attended over the years?
VS: I think seeing the old Masters champions sitting in the room. Snead and Nelson. Having dinner with Snead and Nelson was pretty cool.

IGWT: Can you remember what you shot, round-by-round, when you won the 1998 PGA Championship at Sahalee for your first major championship title?
VS: No. But I could tell you if I look it up.
IGWT: It was 70-66-67-68.
VS: Why you asking me? (Laughs) You know it already.
IGWT: And who came second?
VS: Steve Stricker.
IGWT: What was your position in the tournament going into the final round?
VS: I think I was tied for the lead.
IGWT: Very good.

IGWT: In 2004, your landmark season, you ended up No. 1 on the PGA Tour money list, scoring, and greens in regulation. But what stat in that year were you at No. 133?
VS: Driving possibly ... putting probably ...
IGWT: It was one of those two.
VS: I'll say putting then.
IGWT: That's right. And what stat in 2004 were you No. 145?
VS: Driving accuracy.
IGWT: Spot on. So you can drive it crooked and putt so-so and still be the No. 1 in the world? Nice job Vijay ...

IGWT: Let's think of the positives now big fella. Within 5 million dollars, how much money do you think you have won in your career on the PGA Tour?
VS: 50 million?
IGWT: It's $54,108,218.
VS: Who's counting ... (Laughs)

IGWT: When you won in New Orleans in 2004 during your landmark season, on the Monday finish, what did you shoot over the last nine holes?
VS: Was it 30?
IGWT: Sorry, it was 29. That was a tough one.

IGWT: Can you name the only person younger than you who was ever elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame?
VS: Younger than me?
IGWT: Yes. I can tell you he died in 1875.
VS: Tom Morris. "Young" Tom Morris.
IGWT: That's right. Also Karrie Webb and Se-Ri Pak, but both were not elected as LPGA players get into the Hall of Fame on points rather than election.

IGWT: On September 4, 2004, you won the Deutsche Bank in Massachusetts. That day was an American holiday. What holiday was it?
VS: Bank Holiday.
IGWT: Close enough. It was Labor Day, which is like a bank holiday for Americans. Why was the day significant for you though?
VS: Because I won the tournament.
IGWT: And?
VS: Uhh ... I went to No. 1?
IGWT: That's right. You overtook Tiger Woods for World No. 1. Do you know how many weeks Tiger had the No. 1 ranking for before you took it off him?
VS: No idea.
IGWT: It was 264 weeks. And how many birdies did you make on the closing four holes?
VS: Let's see ... I birdied 15, 17 and 18. So three.
IGWT: Not bad.

IGWT: Correct. Your 31 victories on the PGA Tour are tied for the most by a non-American player. Who are you tied with?
VS: Harry Cooper.
IGWT: And what country was Cooper from?
VS: England.
IGWT: And do you know his nickname?
VS: No.
IGWT: It's "Lighthorse".
VS: "Lighthorse". I wonder where he got that from?

IGWT: For one point, can you name all of your team-mates from the very first International side in the Presidents Cup in 1994?
VS: Fulton Allem, David Frost, Nick Price, Bradley Hughes, Craig Parry, Robert Allenby, Frank Nobilo, Peter Senior, Tsukasa Watanabe, Mark McNulty.
IGWT: One more. He's Australian.
VS: I don't think Norman played. Was it Wayne Grady?
IGWT: Nope, it was Steve Elkington.
VS: Of course, he's a mad guy ...
IGWT: Out of interest, what is your favorite memory from the President's Cup over the years?
VS: Getting together with the team. The team atmosphere.

IGWT: OK, enough heavy lifting. Let's go for some fun ones. This is the specialist subject round. Word says that you are a fan of Pink Floyd. What was the name of Pink Floyd's biggest selling album?
VS: The Wall.
IGWT: Correct. Are all the original members of Pink Floyd still alive?
VS: I think one of them has died already.
IGWT: Do you remember his name?
VS: No. Who was it?
IGWT: Syd Barrett died at age 60 in 2006 from diabetes. Which song is this the opening line to: "Hello, is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me, is there anyone home?"
VS: (Pause) No. I can't think of it.
IGWT: It's Comfortably Numb. I'll give you another try. How about: "Into the distance, a ribbon of black, stretched to the point of no turning back." (Singing for Vijay now)
VS: (Smiling) I know this song ...
IGWT: (We must be good at singing!) "A flight of fancy on windswept field, standing alone, my senses real."
VS: Ah ... I can't think of the name.
IGWT: It has something to do with flying.
VS: (Pause) ... Oh yes, it's Learning To Fly.
IGWT: Well done. And what's the best Pink Floyd album to listen to for long session on the practice tee?
VS: The Division Bell.
IGWT: Former member of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, is a keen golfer. Do you know which golf club he's a member at?
VS: Is it Wentworth?
IGWT: No, it's Sunningdale Golf Club. But that's not too far from Wentworth. Any chance you can guess what he's handicap is?
VS: I don't know. 6? Or 8?
IGWT: It's 11.7 as far as we know. That was a no pointer question anyway. And just for fun, do you know what is on the cover of Roger Waters' first solo album, "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking"? There's a clue in the title.
VS: First solo album? Phhh, no idea.
IGWT: It's a picture of naked Linzi Drew hitchhiking.
VS: (Laughs)

IGWT: You've mentioned the New York Yankees as being your favourite American sports team. Who is the captain of the New York Yankees?
VS: Derek Jeter.
IGWT: Correct. And what position does he play?
VS: It's shortstop.
IGWT: OK, and can you tell me what uniform number Derek Jeter wears?
VS: No. 2.
IGWT: Bang on!

IGWT: OK, and what would be the proper Fijian response when offered a bowl of kava?
VS: Clap three times.
IGWT: We have "Bula!" here.
VS: "Bula!" No.
IGWT: What would you say?
VS: "Vanaka". It means "Thank you."

IGWT: Last question, my man. Do you know what "Vijay" means in the Hindi language?
VS: They tell me it means "Victory".
IGWT: That's correct. And we hope you will taste victory at the end of the day in 2008. The boys will tot up the scores and see how you've done. Thanks for being our first Hall of Famer to play the game.
VS: You're welcome. Thank you.
